Gift Relief

With newspaper articles encouraging you to gift assets to avoid Inheritance Tax, it is worth remembering that such gifts can have a nasty sting in the tail in the form of Capital Gains Tax. If a taxpayer makes a gift of an asset other than to a spouse a capital gain will arise even if no money changes hands. The gain is calculated using the current market value as the deemed sales proceeds.

In order to save paying capital gains tax at the date of a disposal, it is possible in some circumstances to claim Gift Relief.
