Tax inspectors are attempting to recruit homeowners to help them catch builders and other tradesmen who avoid paying VAT.

HM Revenue & Customs are planning to use data from the local authorities planning approval database to identify buildings that have recently undergone building work.

Officials are then writing to house owners to request details such as the value of the work they have had done, how the contractors were paid and their VAT registration numbers.

Homeowners however are under no obligation to respond to these requests.

Following on from last weeks article on the new smoking legislation we have been asked numerous questions on what happens if you work from home.

The Government has no intention to make dwellings and private residential spaces smoke free, except for parts of dwellings used solely as a place of work by more than one person.

If your home is used as an office you have a choice to designate a room for smoking if you wish to do so.
